vocab week 16

1. Asceticism: the doctrine that a person can attain a high spiritual and moral state by practicing self-denial, self-mortification, and the like.
2. Ameliorate: to make or become better, more bearable, or more satisfactory; improve; meliorate.
3. Dissuade: to advise or urge against
4. Fastidious: excessively particular, critical, or demanding; hard to please
5. Flux: continuous change, passage, or movement
6. Gargoyles: a roof spout in the form of a grotesque or fantastic creature projecting from a gutter to carry rainwater clear of the wall.
7. Genuflected: to be servilely respectful or deferential; grovel.
8. Harridans: a woman regarded as scolding and vicious.
9. Misanthrope: a hater of humankind.
10. Solicitous: anxiously desirous
